#I AGREE WITH SO MUCH OF THIS#like. yes the new hs^2 stuff is better. softer i suppose. nicer. more fun.#but like. the Point of beyond canon is that it's abrasive and nasty and not fun. you dragged the corpses of the narrative back out and made#it dance for you. it wasn't going to be fun - fun was not the point. the point was an uncomfortable dissection in the face of#sugary sweet fanon interpretations. here's what happens when a bunch of traumatized teens who were gods before they were 16 grow up.#spoiler alert!! it's nasty!! it's not fun!! there's cheating and drinking and suicide and all sorts of nasty stuff because these are#fundamentally fucked up people!! and to take that Rich Narrative Soup of a story that hates you for reanimating it and turn it into like#the everything is perfect and happy and great funhouse. that kinda sucks. imo the best moments of hs^2 are the messy and bitter ones.#rose and kanaya's argument and jade talking about yiffy are the most interesting thing hs^2 has done so far because they're messy.#this is just like. if a soap opera turned into kid's show with a moral halfway through. where every maladjusted person therapy-talks#their way into character development. i don't want jade to have these realizations about her relationship. they're true and they're the#core of her problems with jake but she shouldn't know that. and that extends to so many other realizations characters are having.#and i love the art and the music and technically this stuff is fantastic. massive props to the team. this just feels like a kind of#dubiously canon escher painting. canon-endorsed fanfiction of something that's not even technically canon. and it leaves the whole thing#feeling contradictory. cause it is. this was made to hate you and now it says we love you - here's what you want. it's fascinating#but it shouldn't be fascinating. but i'm enjoying looking at it anyway (tags from @eyesteeth)

and it's like… i'm not sure who all of this fix-it stuff is for? it's not making the fans who liked the epilogues for what they were happy. but it's also not bringing back many fans who didn't like the post-canon, either -- in my observation, those people STILL don't want anything to do with beyond canon since it's all still building upon all the epilogues stuff that they hated
